Whether you are shooting a sporting event, an interview, or a family vacation, it is important to take the care to shoot good video. We've all seen the bad stuff. It's shaky, it's dark, and maybe the person in the video looks like they are in the identity protection program. Here are a few pointers to consider when shooting good video:

- If at all possible, get outside! Obviously there are going to be those things like the Christmas party or the basketball game where you can't get outside. But your best vacation footage or interview footage is probably going to be the stuff you shoot outside in the sunlight. That is, unless you want to lug around a heavy lighting system and spend a good hour setting them up each time.

- Steady does it. Do your best to brace the camera in a way that it isn't too shaky. It always helps to get as close to your subject as possible. It isn't always possible when shooting a sporting event because it is too hard to follow the action from up close, for instance. In that case, use a tripod if you have one available. It is always beneficial to have a tripod that is at least as heavy or heavier than the camera. This allows smooth camera moves, and it also keeps your camera safe. The $10 tripod you find at Wal-Mart won't usually do you much good.

- Don't forget the audio! Audio is such a key part of the video, and anything lacking audio gets boring in a hurry. Unless you are shooting scenics of Iceland or some other asthetically pleasing landscape, there is no story to be told without the sound. This is another case for getting as close as you can to the subject (like at a school play). It is also a case for using an external mic, if possible, as well as headphones (if your home camera has a headphone jack) to monitor the sound you are getting on tape. What good is that school play without the audio?

Lighting, composition, and sound are three major components that you should focus some attention on in all of your shooting. There are some things you can't control, so control those things that you can in order to create valuable video for years to come!
